Does foundation with an SPF really protect your skin?

Woman applying foundationThese days it’s hard to find a foundation product that doesn’t contain a Sun Protection Factor ( SPF) of at least 15 or higher. Even powder and mineral base foundations now contain SPF.   However, just because these products label sun protection factor (SPF) it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are giving you the amount of sun protection you need.

To insure the most effective sun protection, it is always best to apply a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to your face first and then apply your foundation over top.

Many people believe that when they apply a foundation with an SPF of 15 over top of a sunscreen with SPF 15 that the total SPF amount will equal 30. But this is simply not true, however many sunscreens you apply the total SPF will always be the highest SPF numbered product you use.

The amount of SPF you are getting from a foundation product really depends on the amount you apply on your face and where you put it. So remember to protect your skin by applying sunscreen first and then foundation over top!
